Case Study

Three major oil companies were in partnership to develop a field in deepwater using best practice subsurface technology. The plan required drilling multiple wells, installing subsea wellheads and tying back to one of the partner’s existing platforms 15 miles away.
Success meant achieving the complicated installation schedule as soon as possible without driving up costs. One of the partners had recently employed JMW to achieve a breakthrough in their own exploration drilling program. Based on that experience and its results, JMW was hired to work with the drilling and subsurface teams to reach an earlier date for first oil. The outcome of this effort would confirm the client’s capabilities as operator of a major development in the Gulf of Mexico.
JMW facilitated small group meetings and workshops and individually coached key group leaders from project formulation to first oil. The team worked diligently to identify potential obstacles and achieve early wins. Each time they cut down the drilling and completions schedule, they needed to realign and respond powerfully and quickly to the ensuing problems created. JMW guided the team to treat each major obstacle as an occasion for innovation and intense collaboration.
Despite the obstacles, the project team delivered four months early—at cost and without compromising quality or safety. As such, the partnership benefited from an additional $4 million in revenue.
